I started training in the martial arts when I was 14, I'm now 31. The first martial art I formally trained in was TAE KWON DO. I've also trained in Aikido (pronounced ie key doe), BJJ (Brazilian Jiu jitsu), Hapkido (pronounced hop key doe), Jujitsu (pronounced jew jitsew) (first Bissett, then Can Ryu), Shito Ryu Karate (pronounced sheetoe rew ka raw tay)) , Kickboxing, Muay Thai, Ninjutsu, Wing chun kungfu. I have also studied and practiced Yoga, Pilates, and Qigong (chi kung). I have read a lot of martial arts, fitness, nutrition, and health books, magazines and various other articles. I've also watched over 100 instructional martial arts videos. I've Watched and followed along many fitness videos. I've done so with both an open mind and a skeptical mind. I've heavily pondered, sorted through, practiced, and meditated on the information.
Note: I am no longer interested in traditional (dogmatic) martial arts.

Todd Weber has a diploma in FITNESS & NUTRITION. But that's not all you need to successfully defend yourself, it's just an essential foundation. You need to be mentally, and physically prepared and capable in other ways too. You need to harness or develop your fighting instinct. You need to have an "I will survive I will never give up" attitude, and follow it up with actions.
Here is a list of tips for self-defense:

Be aware of your surroundings.
Have a plan in place as to how you would respond to various attack scenarios the same way you would practice a fire drill.
Have the appropriate mental and physical self-defense techniques available at your disposal. This will require learning and practicing realistic, practical, and effective self-defense techniques, as well as avoidance, diffusion & evasion techniques.
Have confidence in yourself, and in your ability to defend yourself.
Have self worth; if you don't think your life is worth saving, then you won't do too well at defending yourself.
Realize that self-defense is a poor title for what it means. Example: self-defense involves protecting yourself or others from any type of hazard physical or mental.

Another important quality is; a confident, (but not cocky) assertive body language, as well as in speech (but don't insult, aggravate, threaten or challenge!)
The way you carry yourself and the way you speak could determine weather or not a predator see's you as prey!, or follows through with a physical assault.

So, what self-defense techniques are realistic, practical, and effective?
Well, a descriptive list of individual techniques would require an entire course and demonstrations. So I won't go into specifics in this article. What I will give you in this article are some ideas on what needs to be addressed for a technique to be realistic, practical, and effective:

For any self-defense technique to work in the real world, it must address the effects of the adrenaline dump, (adrenaline rush).
When your nervous system receives a signal of an imminent threat, your EMERGENCY NERVOUS SYSTEM is activated. Once activated it starts to stimulate your hypothalamus which results in a release of adrenaline and cortisone, commonly referred to as "the CHEMICAL COCKTAIL." This is the bodies defense mechanism. This results in what is commonly referred to as the "fight or flight response", but I would add that the response could also be freeze, flail, or feint.
The problem is if you don't know how to deal with the "chemical cocktail" and you panic.

Results of the chemical cocktail are:
Fatty acid being released. Fatty acid delivers glucose, which delivers energy. It also releases cortisone. Cortisone inhibits inflammation and dulls pain.

Symptoms of the chemical cocktail are:
Butterfly feeling in stomach. Dilation of pupils, sometimes to the point of tunnel vision. Auditory exclusion. Loss of fine motor coordination. Body shakes. Limited amount of cognitive thinking ability. Decrease of saliva in mouth (dry mouth). Heart rate increases (delivering chemical cocktail to muscle groups.) Increase of stomach acid. Blood pressure increases, results in sweating more. Redirection of blood from the surface of the skin & the digestive system to the muscle & the brain, shutting off non-critical areas and transfers the energy to the critical areas. Sharpened senses.
Hands get cold. Your bowels and bladder loosen and you may lose control ("you can fight with poopy pants."

This is our body's way of preparing us to deal with an emergency. It is giving us the right amount of pain killers, the right amount of energy, the right amount of focus to start dealing with the threat. It is a result of high amounts of stress or fear. It helps you to survive! But if you experience an adrenaline dump often &/or for non emergency situations, that is a problem. Because this chemical cocktail is meant for emergency situations only. Your body and brain can only handle so much of this. If you're always experiencing an adrenaline dump, you might experience adrenal burnout, also known as "adrenal fatigue," and "adrenal fatigue syndrome."

Notice the symptoms; loss of fine motor skills, and limited ability to think clearly.
That means self-defense techniques must not require fine motor skills, or much thought to do them. Self-defense techniques must not be complicated, it must be easy to learn, easy to remember, and simple to execute.
They must be able to work in less then ideal circumstances, and be effective even with a margin of error.

There is more to self-defense than I have written here. I cannot cover every aspect of self-defense in an article. So that's all for now.

p.s. Maybe I will put together a course on self-defense and fitness for self-defense, if there is enough interest. So if you are interested, please let me know.
In the mean time I will post links and recommendations of good self-defense websites and systems. (B) A kick to the groin? (C) a strike to the throat? How about (D) a poke to the eye?
The answer is...

None of the above!
"Whaat! How can that be?" "What else could possibly be the best defense?"
(Hint) it's not a particular move or technique. The answer is...

Being FIT. (both physically and mentally)

"But I heard somewhere that you don't have to be fit to defend yourself!" Well my friend that is a big lie! Here's why:

The ultimate goal in the martial arts is to avoid conflict, and be ego-less. How do you avoid conflict and be ego-less? Let me explain:
First to avoid conflict is both a physical and a mental response to a stimulus. The physical involves walking or running away (escaping anyway possible). How can you escape if you are not fit enough to do so? Escaping will probably involve a lot of movement done quickly. Such as: Running, jumping, climbing over obstacles. Breaking open a door or window (and being able to fit through). Jumping down a height without getting seriously injured. Falling and getting back up etc.
Some people are so stiff and weak they can barely tie their own shoes, let alone escape an attack!

If there's no way of escaping, you need to be physically capable of defending yourself. In such a situation you will experience a big adrenaline dump.
That means your breathing and heart rate will increase dramatically.
If you are not fit, how could your heart and lungs cope with such high demands? How could you defend yourself if you can't breath or have a heart attack, or pass out?

The mental involves not letting insults anger you to the point of physical retaliation, (ego-less). In the case of physical assault, the appropriate mental reaction would be to not panic, to control your fear enough to be able to physically react. Being mentally fit in this context would mean; to have a fighting mentality, a never surrender I will survive I will never give up mentality.
Your mind and body work best in harmony, if you are physically weak, so to will your mind be, and vice versa.
I have found over and over again that people who do healthy exercises thoroughly and consistently to improve themselves, are far more likely to have a healthier mind. Having a healthier mind usually means being a more positive person, one with a lesser ego than the person not living a healthy lifestyle. It also usually means having more control over your reactions. You need to be able to mentally react in order to physically react and defend yourself.
How can you mentally react if you are not mentally fit?

What other qualities are essential for self-defense?
What does it mean to be fit? What if I have medical limitations?
I will discuss these issues in a future article.

Until then; Keep training your mind and body.
Todd Weber
My website address is www.martialtraining.wetpaint.com
My email address is t-weber-3@hotmail.com

ONLY YOU CAN MAKE YOU MAD

 By Todd Weber

Before you say bull, let me explain. When I say only you can make you mad, I mean only you can make you get mad, I don't mean feel angry. It's natural to feel angry once in a while. But if you feel angry a lot, or get angry easily, then something is wrong internally.

People, illness, stress, tiredness, debt, etc. can trigger feelings of anger. But it's up to us how we deal with it.
It's natural for feelings of anger to be triggered by external stimuli, if the stimuli isn't something mi-nute (such as dropping a pen etc.) However, how we respond to that feeling is up to us and us alone.

Even if a person is trying to make you mad, it's up to you if you do. They can't make you get mad, ONLY YOU CAN MAKE YOU get MAD!

I'm not saying if or when it's appropriate to get mad. I'm just saying it's up to you if you do.
However; guard against anger dictating your nature. "When you unleash aggression or hostility on another person, it inspires aggression or hostility in return." "The result then is conflict." "When you act in anger, you lose self-control." "How can you expect to control someone else if you can't control yourself?"
"Rarely does anger avail." "When you lose your temper, you lose yourself." (quotes in this paragraph taken from Joe Hyams book; "ZEN IN THE MARTIAL ARTS").

"Control your emotion or it will control you."-CHINESE ADAGE
"The angry man will defeat himself in battle as well as in life."-SAMURAI MAXIM

Sometimes we blame things or people or circumstance for us getting mad. But the cause is in our own mind! Who would you blame for getting mad if you were the only person on earth?

If you believe inanimate objects, or some force in the universe is conspiring against you, or you believe is even capable of conspiring at all, or you think is causing you to get mad, then I strongly suggest getting medical attention immediately, as this is a sign of a serious mental illness or medical condition!
If you get mad at inanimate objects, then please get help.

If you decide to get mad, control it. Don't let it get to the point that other emotions & senses are blocked out. Because if you let it get that far, the chances of you making rational decisions are slim to none, and you will say and do something stupid that could ruin peoples lives.

Don't blame other people or things for you getting mad. Take responsibility for your own reactions, and remember.
ONLY YOU CAN MAKE YOU MAD!
My website address is www.martialtraining.wetpaint.com
MY email address is t-weber-3@hotmail.com

Todd Weber's fitness training

Dear guest, thank you for visiting my no-nonsense site, feel free to look at my articles and photos.
